Parents Just don't Understand

When it comes to Special Education and when a student needs to referred..ask a teacher, because parent just don't understand.

During my first year of teaching I've seen so many cases of neglect, parents that don't understand what it means to support their child's education at home and parents that are satisfied to do their childs homework for them. I go to work everyday to stand in the gap and give these kids a chance to compete with the children who's parents are super involved with their education.  Because, it makes a difference.

The most surprising thing I've come in contact with is parents that don't want their children to receive special education services. Children that are at the bottom of their class and show little to no signs of improvement that get referred by their teacher for Special education and the parents refuse to allow the child to receive the services. There is a stigma on Special Education that is completely negative and a number of students are given that stigma by their parents. Meanwhile the student is underperforming and falling behind when they could be receiving the attention they needed in Special Education.

Another issue with parents and special education is parent involvement. I've seen parents that are involved and the exact opposite. The difference is always the child. A well supported child thrives in spite of any disability. A child that only learns in school doesn't get the benefits of education and reinforcement.

Ask any Special education teacher...
Ask a teacher that has the task of referring unperforming students...
If the education system was set up that way once referred students woul dbe required to recieve special education the world would be a better place, because
